We are always looking for the ‘how’.
‘How do I quit drinking?’
‘How do I stop being scared?’
‘How do I know what to choose, and what not?’
‘How will I be when I take these steps?’
‘How can I be happy?’
There is not a single piece of action that works for everybody.
There is nothing you can do to know for sure that you’ll get what you want.
Or want to get rid of.
But it happens just the same.
You wake up in the morning and deeply recognize the complete uselessness of numbing your days with alcohol or drugs or sex.
So you quit, and take it from there.
You get fed up with running from your fear, just like that, so you stop with a beating heart and discover that all the fear was only in your mind.
You will choose anyway, sometimes with shitty results, but it doesn’t really matter.
You take steps and find out what they do for you, or what they don’t.
And then you take another step.
Or you don’t.
Lying on the couch, staring at a crack in the ceiling, could be the biggest leap of all.
You will be happy, because happiness will fight its way back into your life, whether you want it or not.
You don’t have to know.
Living is how.
